National Day of Catalonia 2012

Next Tuesday, September 11th will be the National Day of Catalonia.
This commemorates the fall of Barcelona in the hands of the Bourbon troops under the Duke of Berwick during the War of the Spanish Succession September 11 1714, after 14 months of siege.

This recalls the subsequent abolition of the Catalan institutions after the enactment of the New Plant in 1716. Therefore, each September 11, the Catalans continue to manifest symbolically, to demand recognition of the right to autonomy. The Catalan Parliament declared this day as a national holiday in 1980.
