The “Verbena de San Juan”, also known popularly as “The Night of Fire” is a festival that takes place the night between 23 and 24 June. It is of pagan origin, and originally coincided with the summer solstice, June 21. The tradition is to prepare the bonfires with old furniture and objects: at sunset you fire at all and the party begins. It is customary to spend the night away, dine outdoors with family or friends especially at the beach, and in every neighborhood there are concerts that enliven the night. And do not forget to buy fireworks. In Spain they use more fireworks on this occasion that the New Year!
The Official Sweet of San Juan de Sant Juan is the coca (coca de Sant Juan). There are many recipes of coca, with sweet and savory variations. The savory version is similar to pizza dough, but with a more compact format. The sweet version has a base similar to brioche and covered with cream, candied fruit or greaves (llardons, in Catalan). Originally the coca were circular and symbolized the sun. The traditional drink of the evening is the cava.
